Clarissa Ward’s Professional Career
Ward started working at Fox News as an overnight desk assistant in 2003. From 2004 to 2005, Ward worked as an assignment editor for Fox News in New York City. She worked on the foreign desk, where she oversaw coverage of incidents such as Saddam Hussein’s capture, the Indian Ocean tsunami, and the deaths of Yasir Arafat and Pope John Paul II. In 2006, Ward worked as a field producer for Fox News. She covered the Israeli-Lebanese war, the abduction of Gilad Shalit and the subsequent Israeli military operation in Gaza, Saddam Hussein’s trial, and the 2005 Iraqi constitutional vote. From October 2007 through October 2010, Ward worked as an ABC News correspondent in Moscow. She reported from Russia on all ABC News broadcasts and platforms, including “World News with Charles Gibson,” “Nightline,” and “Good Morning America,” as well as ABC News Radio and ABC News Now.
While on assignment in Russia, Ward covered the Russian presidential elections. She was in Georgia during Russia’s invasion of the country’s territory. Prior to October 2007, Ward was stationed in Beirut and worked as a Fox News journalist. She covered Saddam Hussein’s assassination, the 2007 Iraq War troop surge, Beirut Arab University riots, and the 2007 Bikfaya explosions. Ward began her CBS career as a foreign news journalist in October 2011. She began working as a fill-in anchor on CBS This Morning in January 2014 and was a contributor to 60 Minutes. Ward and her colleagues were subjected to sniper fire and aerial bombing in Aleppo, Syria, for their first 60 Minutes investigation in 2012, when they presented one of the first investigations on the development of Islamic extremism within the opposition. Ward covered the Egyptian uprising in July 2013, filming in the same place where CBS correspondent Lara Logan was sexually raped a few years earlier.
She reported on the Syrian revolt, Chinese civil rights activist Chen Guangcheng’s stay at the US Embassy in Beijing, and associated US-China talks and the 2014 Ukrainian revolution. Ward joins CNN on September 21, 2015, and will be reporting across all platforms for the network. She will remain in London to work. On August 8, 2016, she addressed a United Nations Security Council meeting on the situation in civil war-torn Aleppo, drawing on her 10+ years of experience as a war correspondent. Ward took over as CNN’s primary foreign correspondent in July 2018, succeeding Christiane Amanpour. In 2019, she was one of the first Western journalists to report on life in Taliban-controlled areas of Afghanistan.

According to evidence disclosed in August 2020, Ward and her colleagues were apparently under surveillance in the Central African Republic in May 2019. In a joint investigation by The Insider and Bellingcat in partnership with CNN and Der Spiegel in December 2020, she exposed how Russian Federal Security Service (FSB) personnel followed Alexei Navalny for years, including just before his poisoning in August 2020. Ward’s reporting in Myanmar in 2021 was criticized by local media as “parachute journalism” that “serves no purpose other than pursuing bigger ratings” and endangered the lives and families of 11 of her interview subjects. Ward covered the Taliban surge in Afghanistan in August 2021, conducting interviews with Taliban leaders and front-line soldiers.
